VEIJO HUKKA
The symbolic message, hidden behind the everyday trivial signs and
citations, has been present in Hukkas work since the 70’s, but the content
and the style of the message begun to crystallize after the mid 80’s when
the attempt to imitate reality decreased clearly or perhaps vanished
altogether. Though the artist calls himself symbolist, his paintings, as
regards style and motives, are more marked by multiple interpretations,
diversity and mixing of styles, than by following a certain aesthetic or
philosophic principle. Hukkas paintings can be described in a vague and
general manner simply “Hukkalike paintings” , when they have shades of
symbo-lism, surrealism and naive art and intensive use of colours. Hukkas
approach to a picture resembles the earlier mentioned technique based on
senses and rapid mental images where pictorial ideas
are worked up and treaded subconsciously in dreams as well. In Hukkas case
we could also talk of “ a technique of free associations” in which outside
stimuli, current events and the tensions therein kindle a pictorial motif
which will be refined partly unconsciously by the work of the subconscious.
